John Leslie Meitzen, 80, peacefully slipped into eternal rest and entered his Heavenly home on October 26, 2023, with his daughter by his side.
John was born to Jacob “Jack” and Teresa “Connie” Meitzen of Cuero, TX on July 7, 1943. John attended grade school at St. Michael’s Catholic School in Cuero and graduated with honors from Cuero High School. He attended Victoria College for two years before transferring to the University of Texas in Austin, Tx. While at the University of Texas, he joined the Karate Club and earned a black belt in Karate, a bachelor’s in accounting, and a master’s degree in business management. He joined the Air Force Reserves and although was never deployed overseas, he was drafted to California and was waiting to be deployed when the Vietnam War ended. Upon returning to Texas, he went to work for a state agency in Austin, TX where he met the love of his life, Lorine Kruger Meitzen. He fully accepted and adopted her three sons: Rick, Ray Steven, and Randy Lynn. In the years following, they raised their granddaughter/daughter in Houston, Tx where he went to work for Houston Iron Works and amassed many friends. He also worked in Victoria, Tx as administrator for the law office of Knute Dietze. He spent his last years as a tax-preparer and advisor.
John enjoyed playing poker with his friends; lawyers and judges alike and you could find him every year at the Cuero Poker Tournament. He also spent many hours with his beloved friends at Hungry Thirsty Jacks and the Forum Club in Victoria, Tx talking about current events, news, and taxes. He was also an avid volunteer where his grandsons went to school and loved volunteering at the Fall Festival counting tickets and helping with the accounting. He will be remembered by all that knew him as a devoted husband and father/grandfather, a great friend and helper, and an advice giver to all, from those that had nothing, to the wealthy. He loved deeply and passionately his family here on earth and was very committed to his faith inside and outside the church.
He is survived by his wife of almost 50 years come January 2024, one son Ray Steven Meitzen (Kay) of Arkansas, and Sheryl Loraine Meitzen, born granddaughter but raised from birth as his daughter and her two sons; Jon Paul Williams, and Josiah James Rickman. He is survived by one brother, James “Ike” Meitzen (Marva) and their children Jennifer Meitzen Craig (Jeff), Lisa Meitzen Baker (Joey), and Jay Meitzen (Laura) of Victoria, Tx. He is also survived by granddaughter Janey Rena Perryman (Kyle) of Mississippi and great grandchildren Granger and Delta. He is survived by grandson Rick A. Meitzen Jr. of Wharton, Tx and great grandchildren Mason and Chloe.
John is preceded in death by his parents and two sons Rick A. Meitzen, Sr., and Randy Lynn Meitzen both of Austin, Tx.
