He joined the Air Force Reserves and although was never deployed overseas, he was drafted to California and was waiting to be deployed when the Vietnam War ended. Upon returning to Texas, he went to work for a state agency in Austin, TX where he met the love of his life, Lorine Kruger Meitzen. He fully accepted and adopted her three sons: Rick, Ray Steven, and Randy Lynn. He also worked in Victoria, Tx as administrator for the law office of Knute Dietze. He spent his last years as a tax-preparer and advisor.
John enjoyed playing poker with his friends; lawyers and judges alike and you could find him every year at the Cuero Poker Tournament.
